Fine Arts Museum and Les Champs Libres
The Fine Arts Museum, on Quai Émile-Zola, holds works by Rubens, Georges de La Tour and Picasso in a fine neo-classical setting. A few steps away, Les Champs Libres bring together a library, the Museum of Brittany and a Science Hall in a building designed by Christian de Portzamparc. You visit a show on Saturday and leave with a thousand topics to carry on over coffee.
Opera, TNB and FRAC Brittany
The Rennes Opera House, tucked onto Place de la Mairie, is one of the smallest and most charming in France. The Théâtre National de Bretagne stages contemporary creations, dance and auteur cinema in a building at the heart of town. To the north, FRAC Brittany, a long black bar set in the Beauregard district, explores today’s art and makes a perfect ending to a curious afternoon together.
A city that does not sleep
In December, the Trans Musicales shake Rennes, and the Rock School Barbey confirms the city’s place in live music. The rest of the year, concerts, themed bars and alternative stages liven up Place Hoche and the station area. On Lyad, members from Rennes share their current favourites: it is up to you to find someone to applaud the next creation with.
